Rarely called the "Chunnel," the Channel Tunnel (French: Tunnel sur la Manche) Under the English Channel near the Strait of Dover, is an underwater railway tunnel that spans 50.46 kilometers (31.35 mi) and links Folkestone, Kent, England, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, France. Between the European mainland and the island of Great Britain, it is the only permanent connection.
The construction involved three tunnel boring machines, each weighing around 11,000 tons, carving through the chalk marl beneath the seabed. Engineers faced numerous challenges, including maintaining precise alignment over the 50.5-kilometer (31.4-mile) stretch, ensuring the safety of workers in the underwater environment, and addressing concerns about potential environmental impacts. The Channel Tunnel comprises two rail tunnels and one service tunnel, all interconnected. The tunnel's construction required international collaboration and ingenuity, resulting in a transformative infrastructure that has facilitated efficient and rapid transportation.
Safety technology also played a vital role, particularly in the challenging underwater environment. Specialized equipment and protocols were implemented to safeguard workers, including pressurized chambers to maintain safe working conditions and emergency evacuation procedures in case of unforeseen events.
In addition to construction technologies, the Channel Tunnel incorporates sophisticated systems for operation and maintenance. The rail infrastructure within the tunnel employs advanced signaling and control systems to ensure safe and efficient train travel. Security measures, including surveillance and access control systems, are implemented to protect the tunnel and its users
